Calcium channel blockers (verapamil, possibly diltiazem): May increase serum levels of carbamazepine significantly; decrease carba-mazepine dosage by 40% to 50% when given with verapamil.
Cimetidine, clarithromycin, erythromycin, isoni-azid, propoxyphene, valproic acid: May increase serum carbamazepine levels. Use cautiously; monitor carbamazepine levels.
Ethosuximide, haloperidol, phenytoin, valproic acid, warfarin: Carbamazepine may increase me-tabolism of these drugs. Monitor patient care-fully.
Felbamate: Concomitant use may result in low-er serum levels of either drug. Monitorpatient and drug levels.
Fluoxetine, fluvoxamine. May increase carba-mazepine levels. Monitor carbamazepine levels.
MAO inhibitors: Concomitant use may cause hy-pertensive crisis. Avoid concomitant use or use drug within 14 days of MAOs.
Oral contraceptives, theophylline: Carbamazepine may decrease effectiveness of these drugs. Mon-itor patient; suggest alternate method of contra-ception.
Phenobarbital, phenytoin, primidone: Lowers serum carbamazepine levels. Monitor serum car-bamazepine level. |
