Interactions:

Clozapine

  • Adverse Effect: an increased risk of gastrointestinal bleeding and hyperglycemia  
  • Clinical Management: Caution should be observed when clozapine and buspirone are coadministered.

    Diltiazem

  • Adverse Effect: an increased risk of enhanced buspirone effects  
  • Clinical Management: Monitor patients who are receiving diltiazem and buspirone for enhanced sedative effects of buspirone. Low doses of buspirone should be employed.

    Erythromycin

  • Adverse Effect: increased buspirone plasma concentrations; increased buspirone side effects (impaired psychomotor performance, sedation)  
  • Clinical Management: Erythromycin should be avoided in patients treated with buspirone.

    Fluoxetine

  • Adverse Effect: worsening of psychiatric symptoms  
  • Clinical Management: If possible, the combination of fluoxetine and buspirone should be avoided.

    Haloperidol

  • Adverse Effect: An increased risk of haloperidol adverse effects (akathisia, tongue stiffness)  
  • Clinical Management: Monitor patients for excessive haloperidol adverse effects (akathisia, tongue stiffness). A dosage adjustment of haloperidol may be required.

    Itraconazole

  • Adverse Effect: increased buspirone plasma concentrations; increased buspirone side effects (impaired psychomotor performance, sedation)  
  • Clinical Management: Itraconazole should be avoided in patients treated with buspirone.

    Rifampicin

  • Adverse Effect: reduced anxiolytic effects of buspirone  
  • Clinical Management: Monitor patients receiving rifampin and buspirone for buspirone efficacy. Doses of buspirone may need to be increased when rifampin is coadministered.

    Selegiline

  • Adverse Effect: hypertensive crisis  
  • Clinical Management: Coadministration of buspirone with Selegiline is not recommended.

    Trazadone

  • Adverse Effect: An elevated SGPT (ALT) level  
  • Clinical Management: During concurrent therapy with trazodone and buspirone, monitor liver function closely.

    Verapamil

  • Adverse Effect: an increased risk of enhanced buspirone effects  
  • Clinical Management: Monitor patients who are receiving verapamil and buspirone for enhanced sedative effects of buspirone.
