Interactions:

Carbamazepine

  • Adverse Effect Increased risk of carbamazepine toxicity (ataxia, nystagmus, diplopia, headache, vomiting, apnea, seizures, coma)  
  • Clinical Management: For patients receiving concurrent carbamazepine and loxapine therapy, monitor for signs of carbamazepine toxicity and adjust doses accordingly.

    Lithium

  • Adverse Effect Weakness, dyskinesias, increased extrapyramidal symptoms, encephalopathy, and brain damage  
  • Clinical Management: Monitor patients closely for any signs of toxicity or extrapyramidal symptoms, especially if high doses of Loxapine and lithium are used.

    Tramadol

  • Adverse Effect Increased risk of seizures
  • Clinical Management: Caution should be used if tramadol is to be administered to patients receiving neuroleptic therapy. If possible, avoid this combination
